A DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH TO TEACHING AND PRACTICING CHILD PSYCHOTERAPY
K. Michael Hong

Lawrence M. Greenberg
Abstract
A systematic application of a developmental model in the diagnosis and psychotherapy of children and its usefulness in clinical and training activities are presented. The process of psychotherapy is conceptualized as the child¢¥s successful progress through sequential developmental phases within the therapeutic relationship. By re-experiencing this developmental process, the child can accomplish once-failed developmental tasks of particular developmental stage or stages in their past. This model provides a simple yet comprehensive framework which enables the clinician to accurately evaluate therapeutic progress and select appropriate techniques suitable for that particular therapeutic phase. This model also provides many useful guidelines for working with parents and teaching and supervision of psychotherapy.
